KUSCCO Faces Sh12.5 Billion Loss: Ministry of Cooperatives to Investigate Financial Mismanagement

1 min read

After the revelation of KUSCCO's massive financial scandal, attention now shifts to the next steps in addressing the crisis. The Ministry of Cooperatives and MSMEs Development, led by Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya, will thoroughly review the forensic audit report by Price Water House Coopers (PwC) and take the following actions:

  1. Detailed Investigation and Prosecution
The Ministry has promised to involve government investigative agencies, including the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), to expedite the investigation process. Legal proceedings are expected against all individuals implicated in the audit report.

  2. Recovery of Lost Funds
One of the Ministry’s primary goals will be to recover the Sh12.5 billion loss caused by financial improprieties. Authorities will trace and seize assets acquired through the misappropriated funds.

  3. Restructuring KUSCCO
The appointed interim Board of Directors will continue its oversight role, focusing on stabilizing and reconstructing KUSCCO. Efforts will likely include revising management practices, enforcing stricter governance, and aligning the institution with regulatory standards.

  4. Policy and Legal Reforms
In light of the gaps revealed in the current cooperative laws, the Ministry is expected to advocate for stronger oversight mechanisms. Legislative reforms will be proposed to safeguard the future of savings and credit cooperatives, ensuring proper supervision and financial transparency.

  5. Public Communication and Stakeholder Engagement
As investigations unfold, the Ministry will maintain open communication with the public and stakeholders in the cooperative sector. A press release detailing the Ministry’s course of action is forthcoming, underscoring the government’s commitment to restoring trust in the cooperative movement.

This unfolding scandal serves as a crucial turning point for Kenya's cooperative sector, and further developments will dictate the level of accountability and reform implemented in the industry.
