This book has been specially prepared for pupils of Art and Design. Emphasis is placed on locally available and inexpensive materials. The authors first of all give the historical background to each topic. After that the materials for the topic are given and the theory of the process is explained. The opening chapter covers the elements and principles of two-dimensional art and design. These should also be applied in three-dimensional work which is specifically covered in the separate chapters dealing with skills in three dimensions. The other topics covered are:
Drawing, Painting, Mosaic, Collage, Printmaking, Sculpture,Graphic Design, Fabric design/decoration, Weaving, Basketry,Leatherwork, Ornaments, Ceramics.
Throughout the text, the authors give step-by-step instructions on the processes which the students should follow. This however does not eliminate the need for the students to use their own artistic skills and imagination. The text is also punctuated with clear diagrams and photographs which are of great value especially in topics such as weaving, basketry and fabric design.
