There are several factors that are considered when coming up with the final list of promoted teachers. Factors like regional balance, gender equity, and affirmative action for ASAL (Arid and Semi-Arid Lands) counties among others were considered. Below are the standard procedures used when promoting teachers.
Primary Teacher II
This is the entry grade upon employment. The requirements are:
Have the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education grade of C plain and above or any other equivalent qualifications that are recognized.
Should have a Primary Teacher Certificate or any other recognized equivalent.
Should meet all the requirements according to Chapter 6 of the Kenyan constitution and other requirements the commission deems necessary.
Primary Teacher I
This is a teacher who has been promoted from primary teacher II. The requirements for the promotion are:
They should have served as a primary teacher II for a minimum time of 3 years.
They shall be in possession of a valid teaching certificate.
They should have achieved a satisfactory rating in the performance and appraisal process.
They should have demonstrated their prowess in class management.
They should meet all the requirements as per Chapter 6 of the Kenyan constitution and other requirements the commission deems necessary.
Senior Teacher II
This is a teacher who has been promoted from primary teacher I and they mark entry into the administrative cadre. However, unlike the primary teacher I and II, this position is competitive and depends on the availability of a vacancy. The requirements are:
They should have served as a primary teacher I for a period not less than 3 years.
They should be in possession of a valid teaching certificate.
They should have achieved satisfactory rating in the performance and appraisal process.
They should have undertaken the necessary TPD modules.
They should have demonstrated their prowess in supervising, mentoring and providing support to their fellow teachers.
They should meet all the requirements as per the Kenyan constitution chapter 6 and all other requirements the commission deems necessary.
Senior Teacher I
This teacher has been promoted from senior teacher II. They become one of the school administrators and are in charge of other teachers. They are fully in charge of the school if for any reason the head and the deputy of the school are absent. Requirements for this position are:
They should have served as a senior teacher II for a period not less than 3 years.
They should have undertaken all the necessary TPD modules.
They should be in possession of a valid teaching certificate.
They must have achieved satisfactory rates in the performance and appraisal process.
They should have demonstrated their prowess in supervision, mentorship and provision of support to their fellow teachers.
They should meet all the requirements according to chapter 6 of the Kenyan constitution and all the requirements the commission may deem necessary.
Deputy Head teacher II
This teacher has been promoted from senior teacher I. They are now directly answerable to the head teacher especially on matters of the development and implementation of the curriculum, programs and education policies. They will be in charge of the school in case the head teacher is absent. Requirements for this position are:
They should have served as senior teacher I for a period not less than 3 years.
They should be in possession of a valid teaching certificate.
They must have attained satisfactory rates in the performance and appraisal process.
They should have undertaken all the necessary TPD modules.
They should have demonstrated their ability to mentor, supervise, and give professional support to their fellow teachers.
They should meet all the requirements according to the Kenyan constitution chapter 6 and all other requirements the commission deems necessary.
Deputy Head Teacher I
This teacher has been promoted from deputy head teacher II and this promotion is only for primary school administrators. They are directly answerable to the head teacher especially for the development and implementation of the curriculum, education plans, programs and policies. They are in charge of the school in case the head teacher is absent. The requirements for this position are:
They should have served as deputy head teacher II for a period not less than 3 years.
They should be in possession of a valid teaching certificate.
They should have achieved satisfactory rating in the performance and appraisal process.
They should have undertaken all the necessary TPD modules.
They should have demonstrated their ability to supervise, provide professional support and mentor their fellow teachers.
They should meet all the requirements as per chapter 6 of the Kenyan constitution and all other requirements that the commission deems necessary.
Head Teacher
This is a promotion among the primary school administrators for deputy head teacher I. They are the lead teacher and head of the school. They lead the development and implementation of the curriculum, education plans, policies and programs. The also head the implementation of work plans, budgets and school strategies. In general, they supervise all operations in the school. The requirements for this position are:
They should have served as deputy head teacher I for a period not less than 3 years.
They should have undertaken all the necessary TPD modules.
They should be in possession of a Bachelor’s degree in Education or its equivalent.
They should have achieved satisfactory rating in the performance and appraisal process.
They should be in possession of a valid teaching certificate.
They must have demonstrated their abilities in supervision, mentorship and provision of professional support to their fellow teachers.
They should meet all the requirements of chapter 6 of the Kenyan constitution and all other requirements the commission may deem necessary.
Senior Head Teacher
This is another promotion that happens among the administrators of primary schools, from the position of a head teacher or deputy head teacher I. They lead in the implementation of the curriculum, education programs, policies and plans. They also oversee implementation of school budgets, work plans, strategies and all the school operations. The requirements for this position are:
They should have served as either a head teacher or deputy head teacher I for a period not less than 3 years.
They should be in possession of a Bachelor’s degree in Education or its equivalent.
They should be in possession of a valid teaching certificate.
They should have undertaken all the necessary TPD modules.
They should have achieved satisfactory rates in the performance and appraisal process.
They should have demonstrated their ability in supervision, mentorship and provision of professional support to their fellow teachers.
They should meet all the requirements according to chapter 6 of the Kenyan constitution and all other requirements the commission may deem necessary.
